About Our Township

Sherman Township's only remaining community of Gay, once a thriving city during the mining during the early 1900's, features a historic stamp mill smokestack which can be seen for miles and is used as a navigational aid. The Gay Bar is also part of the local color. The Gay Fire Department Auxiliary hold their well known bazaars from late June to Labor Day; see this year's schedule in "Sherman Township News & Announcements." The Community Hall where the bazaars are held is handicapped accessible. Proceeds benefit the Fire & Rescue Department and community projects.

The major event in Gay is on July 4th which includes the unique Gay Parade, starting time of 2 PM, the hughe Auxiliary sale, and the Fire Department’s open house. Everyone is welcome to join the parade. Fire & Rescue Department also provides a community breakfast in both mid-October and late-May each year.  The Auxiliary often sponsors a Holloween and Christmas parties with food, decorations, door prizes, and children gifts are donated by local residents.  Pickleball is available for free indoors on hardwood floor within the Community Hall from November through April on Saturdays from 10 AM to noon.

The School House Park is located next to the historic school in Gay on Second Street. The park is open from May through October during daylight hours. Park features include handicap accessibility for parking, pavilion, picnic tables, grills, toilet, water and a playground. The pavilion includes over 20 unique carvings completed by a local artist.

Sherman Township is an equal opportunity provider and employer.

Contact Fire Chief for information regarding fire protection and emergency medical services; call 911 for emergency help and fires.

Outdoor burning permits are required. Please note the fire danger level sign at the fire station in Gay and check the DNR website for today's burning permits. You should inform the Fire Chief by call or text if you are going to burn so that the department is aware of the potential 911 call from the public noticing heavy smoke or flames. Burn notification should include name, contact information, and burn location, material, and duration.

Please consider helping your community by joining the department as either, or both, a firefighter or medical first responder.
